《기능도 Function, Too》
전시 《기능도 Function, Too》는 400VIEW가 참여한 완주문화재단의 〈완주예술가한달살기〉 프로그램 결과 보고전시로, 전주역 지하아케이드에서 2021년 8월 전시되었다.
완주군 구이면으로 귀촌한 중년여성 5명을 대상으로 두 달 가량 〈자기토템워크샵〉을 진행했다. 각 참여자에게 자신의 가정을 대표하는 역할을 맡는 부족장이 된다는 설정과, ‘나’라는 개인의 다면적인 측면을 상상하는 과정을 제시하고, 간단한 조형물 제작 원리에 대한 수업을 진행했다. 참여자들은 워크샵 과정 안에서 자연물을 직접 수집하고 자신을 대표하는 토템을 만들었다. 참여자들의 염원을 담은 각 토템을 더욱 도와주기 위한 방편으로 400VIEW는 각 토템의 기능을 위한 도구를 맞춤으로 제작하고, 이를 설명하기 위한 문양을 만들었다.
본 작업이자 전시 제목인 ‘기능도’는 토템을 착용한 참여자들의 사진과 그들을 위해 제작한 문양이 설치된 벽, 그리고 400VIEW가 각 부족을 설명하기 위해 제작한 두 가지 영상, 그리고 작업 중 진행된 대화를 바탕으로 쓴 글로 구성된다. 그리고 이러한 영상과 글은 ‘역’이라는 특성상 사람들이 오가며 집어가는 핸드아웃 내의 QR코드로 배포했다.
The exhibition 《기능도 Function, Too》 was presented in August 2021 at the underground arcade of Jeonju Station as the concluding exhibition of the One-Month Residency for Artists in Wanju program organized by the Wanju Cultural Foundation, in which 400VIEW participated.
Over the course of approximately two months, 400VIEW conducted the Self-Totem Workshop with five middle-aged women who had relocated to Gui-myeon, Wanju-gun. The workshop proposed a fictional setting in which each participant became the tribal chief responsible for representing their household, while also encouraging them to imagine the multiple facets of the self as an individual. Alongside introductory lessons on simple sculptural construction methods, participants collected natural materials directly and created totems representing themselves.
As a way of further supporting the wishes embodied in each totem, 400VIEW custom-produced tools corresponding to the functions of each object and designed symbolic patterns to explain them. The work, and exhibition title, Function, Too, consists of photographs of participants wearing their totems, a wall installation of the symbols produced for them, two videos created by 400VIEW to describe each “tribe,” and texts written from conversations that emerged throughout the workshop process. These videos and texts were distributed through QR codes embedded in handouts that visitors could pick up while passing through the station.

400VIEW는 2달 동안 참여자들과 교류하며 그들의 삶에 대한 다양한 이야기를 수집했고, 이를 통해 각 토템의 의미들을 인터뷰하여 개별의 문양을 완성했다. 이는 그들이 직접 제작한 조형물들의 형태를 참고했다.
이러한 이야기를 바탕으로 각 부족의 토템을 홍보하는 영상과 참여자들이 자연물을 수집한 구이면 근방의 장소들 속에서 그들의 이야기를 시적으로 보여주는 영상을 제작하여 함께 전시했다.
Over the course of two months, 400VIEW engaged with the participants and gathered various stories about their lives, conducting interviews around the meanings of each totem in order to complete individual symbolic patterns. These symbols were developed with reference to the forms of the sculptural objects the participants had created themselves.
Based on these narratives, 400VIEW produced promotional videos for each tribe’s totem, alongside poetic video works presenting the participants’ stories within the landscapes around Gui-myeon where they had collected natural materials. These works were exhibited together as part of the project.
