Field Trip

Field Trip
employs the beginning and end of the video, the condition of departure and return that defines a field trip, and the unit of a day as the narrative structure of movement within the video. A field trip only comes into being through departure and return. As day passes into night, a day ends and continues into the next. Within the exhibition space, the video, while maintaining a linear structure, is subject to continuous looping. Bound by the formal condition of the video “loop” within the larger linear framework of narrative, each event attempts to extend itself into what follows, rendering it uncertain whether they in fact share the same time. This movement—where loop, day, and field trip are interlinked—cannot be halted. The figures within the video continue to move from place to place, across and beyond the screen of the device within the image, and from still images to afterimages, their gaze slipping continuously along a horizontal timeline without an outside.

Synopsis

Synopsis

In the morning, A sets out on a field trip and begins to register fragments of what comes into view. Scenes encountered while breathing in imprint themselves rapidly on the eyes. They appear both new and strangely familiar. What becomes memory through recording merges into similar forms and scenes, or, through this process, shifts into other places. During this time, A has the sense of having arranged to meet someone, and waits in various locations with the expectation of encountering them soon, yet no one appears.
Although A repeatedly pauses in ways that seem easy to capture, these attempts fail to result in any encounter with what remains nearby. Movement continues—toward other places or into other forms. It becomes impossible to remain in a single location, and when A does stop, what appears ceases to function as a scene and instead becomes a fixed image. Someone seems to be waiting elsewhere, yet the meeting never occurs, in part because everything remains in motion.
At some point within the frame, an image attempts to become a photograph—to remain fixed—but continues to move, and night deepens. While every transformation presupposes a point of return, the spaces in which the figures momentarily dwell or become suspended within the frame do not settle into a fixed position or arrival, and instead continue to shift.
