Opreration
Gress Set is a program that operates three video channels within a twelve-minute loop. Within the exhibition space, these three channels intersect and reflect different structures of spectatorship: the causal construction of point-of-view shots (POV) rooted in classical cinematic grammar through the presentation of subjects and insert shots; first-person-view shots (FPV), which reveal fragments of the body in order to produce immediate immersion without causal linkage; and finally, the spectator’s own viewpoint, reflected back through external windows and monitors.
Derived from the word “gress,” originating in the notion of moving forward, the program focuses on the movement of gazes unfolding across the screen. The work consists of Finite Gress, a 3D graphic-centered sequence following the perspective of a young girl confronted by a hand slowly approaching her; 2nd Gress, a live-action work tracing the disjunction between the face visible on the screen and the direction of the gaze observing it; and Next, which reconstructs the POV structures of Finite Gress into twelve separate sequences while intercutting them with thirty-second intervals of live camera footage capturing the backs of spectators watching the monitor.
Within these overlapping layers of perspective—within the blinking empty eyes of a 3D girl watching something inside the monitor, and before the false wall that prevents viewers from seeing themselves watching the screen—the program metaphorically addresses a contemporary environment of multiplied viewpoints in which the cinematic POV shot, originally devised for immersion, increasingly displaces or ultimately empties the position of the subject amid the growing transparency of media itself.
Finite Gress, 2026, Single-channel video, color, sound, 12'
Finite Gress explores the exchange of perspectives surrounding a girl in a 3D environment who separates her own eyes and hands, issuing commands that cause herself to approach herself. The first-person hands, exposing the structure of FPV shots, slowly cross toward the girl, while the girl observing them—her eye region left empty—searches for ways of moving beyond the position in which she sits each time she closes her eyes. In this process, the work interweaves the classical cinematic logic of POV shots, in which blinking eyes trigger shifts in the screen, with the immediate bodily immersion produced by first-person movement.
The twelve-minute video, itself structured around repetition, loops through a sequence in which every six minutes the approaching hands press against the girl’s neck as though attempting to strangle her. Yet within the conditions of a 3D environment, this action merely distorts the graphic surface before shifting into the next wall and repeating the command once again. Through this doubled repetition, the girl connects the vertical relation of looking upward from below to a vertical editorial movement inward through layers, or alternatively displaces the situation outward into the space beyond the screen through swiping gestures that navigate the interior of the 3D environment. In this way, movement is produced without the body itself moving.
2nd Gress, 2026, Single-channel video, color, sound, 3'
The woman watching the screen is herself watching her own image appearing within it. The woman inside the screen, however, looks in a direction different from the direction toward which the watching woman turns her head. This short video follows the movement of a woman holding a phone screen that traces these displaced layers of movement and perspective.
By partially employing rigging techniques that use the misaligned viewpoint within the screen as the subject of the image itself, the work emphasizes the condition of a fragmented perspective.
Next, 2026,Single-channel & real-time synchronized video, color, sound, 3'
Twelve thirty-second clips depicting acts of looking are randomly intercut with real-time feedback footage capturing the backs of spectators watching Finite Gress. However, because of the false wall dividing the space, viewers are placed in a physical position in which they cannot simultaneously observe themselves watching the work. Only after encountering the screen hidden behind the partition can they begin to infer their own position within the installation. The face of the girl gazing outward from the showroom produces an image that looks simultaneously inward and outward, merging with the reflections of passersby appearing upon the glass surface.

Within this structure, the subject that generates the viewpoint continuously escapes from the position of ownership over that viewpoint, making the separation itself increasingly explicit. Through this configuration, the work attempts to produce a sensation akin to looking outward without actually seeing, or believing oneself to be witnessing a situation through the figure of a girl who appears to observe something on behalf of the spectator, while in reality not truly seeing it at all.
