Mouthless(2026)

Mouthless(2026)
is an essay video centered on a first-person journey reconstructed through prompt-based image-to-video AI using photographs and videos received from friends traveling across various locations including Hong Kong, Japan, Australia, the United Kingdom, Italy, and the Korean cities of Gunsan and Mokpo. The work reconfigures material previously tested in an earlier project (Mouthless, 2024) through the lens of developments in generative AI since that time, while also functioning as an extension of an ongoing personal archival project.

The photographic dumps received from acquaintances preserve traces from which the emotional atmosphere of travel may be inferred, yet remain frozen without fully revealing it. Through prompts instructing FPV perspectives and “naturalistic filming” styles, these fragments are reconnected and reconstructed through the artist’s point of view. However, the one-take transnational continuity generated through such commands produces the emergence of another perspective fundamentally distant from human vision, speed, and movement. Hands fixed at the bottom of the screen transport the body through an immobilized field of vision; within handheld shots that suddenly shift into bird’s-eye views, fragments of the body appear awkwardly rigged into the frame. Additional screens emerging while connecting separated images convert the immersive first-person perspective of the viewer into a literary viewpoint of first-person observation captured by the camera itself. In other words, through the process of forcibly suturing together place and subject within an immersive first-person journey, the spectator is simultaneously separated into a third-person camera perspective and anchored instead within the dynamics of movement itself.

Chapter Tiitle, excerpted from mouthless

The video unfolds through several layered stages: the process of categorizing the raw image materials used for the AI-generated sequences; the emergence of a first-person subject-narrator perspective produced through internal repetitions occurring during the testing of prompt-based AI; the appearance of a newly divided viewpoint in which the first-person observer and the third-person protagonist become separated once again through the rigging of the AI camera within continuous movement; and finally, the subtitles reintroduced into the channel through this process, exposing the viewpoint embedded within the prompts themselves.
At once a reflective essay video and a record of the observational conditions encountered while working with generative image AI, the project also seeks to document the ways these programs have shifted into forms increasingly different from those encountered in 2024.
